Step Out of Your Comfort Zone!
Life has so many twists and turns and before you know it half your life is gone. There are so many things you have already accomplished but your not done yet. Now you are the ripe age of 40 something and you realize what you wanted in your 20s and 30s may not be the same thing you want right now. You want more out of yourself. If your lucky, you’re only halfway through this lifetime but you only have a window to reach your full potential. If you are going to do it, you have to make the move now. You have many life experiences to draw upon to determine what you need to change. The big question is, “Do you have the focus and drive to do it now at this stage in your life?” I’m not talking about buying that new shiny red corvette or buying the typical things you hear people buy during their mid life crisis. This article is about reinventing yourself at 40 something so you can fulfill all your dreams.
Why do it? I believe everyone at this stage should reevaluate their life and make changes that will make the second half of their life more rewarding. I relate it to an athlete. An athlete will assess their skills and determine what areas they need to focus on to become an even better athlete. This is true in life at 40 something. You have developed all these great skills and some not so great. You have gotten this far but now you want to take yourself to another level. Do you have the courage to be honest with yourself, get out of your comfort zone, identify areas of your life you want to improve, and most importantly, make the changes?
- Be honest with yourself: Do you have the ability to identify your strengths and weaknesses objectively? You may also want to consider getting feedback from close friends or relatives. If you do that, be sure to listen with an open mind and do not get defensive. Talk to more than one or two people and listen for underlining themes.
- Get out of your comfort zone: Yes, you are 40 something so you might be set in your ways. If you are, it’s going to hold you back. Think of this process as a new adventure. Do something you have never done before. Find new things you enjoy doing. Join a book club, learn how to scuba dive, find a hiking buddy, go deep sea fishing, or take a pottery class. The most important thing is you get out there and get out of your comfort zone.
- Identify areas of your life you want to improve: We all have room for growth. What is it in your life that is standing in your way? By now your kids are at the age where they don’t need you 24/7. You finally have time for YOU. Make the most of this new found time and do something extraordinary.
- Make the changes: Think about all the times you have told yourself, “If only I could…” Now is the time to do it. Want to get in shape…Do it! Want to start a business… Do it! Want to be a motivational speaker…Do it! Want to get back in the workforce…Do it! Whatever it is you want to do…Do it! Take away all the obstacles you have in your way and make your dreams come true.
Remember, you have one life. If you are going to make your dreams come true, the time is now. You can draw upon all your life experiences (the good and the bad), make the proper changes, and ensure the second half of your life is what you want it to be. As I mentioned earlier, your kids are now at an age where they don’t require as much from you, so now it’s your time. Your time to do what you have always wanted to do. Go make your dreams come true!
